Wireless Open-Closed Sensor Installation

This tech-tip is meant to give some suggestions for installing wireless open-closed sensors for your application.

Before Mounting Your Sensor

Before mounting your sensor, check to make sure the sensors has been added to your viewmysensors account.  Sensors must be registered to a gateway to be operable.

To register

1. Open ViewMySensors from a web browser or from your smart device

2. Enter your username and password.

3. Select the “Login” button.

4. Select the sensor option

5. Select the "Add Sensor" button.

6. Enter the Device ID and the Security Code from your devices in the corresponding text boxes. Select the Scan Barcode button to use the camera on your smart-phone to scan the QR code on your sensor and gateway. If you do not have a camera on your phone, or the system is not accepting the QR code, you may enter the Device ID and Security Code manually.

7. Next, you will be asked to enter the Security Code (SC) on your device. A security code will be a set of six capital letters. The Device ID is a unique number located on each device label. The Device ID is a unique number located on each device label. It will be labeled as “ID” on your gateway or  sensor.

8. Enter the Security Code (SC) on your device. A security code will be all letters, no numbers. It can also be found on the barcode label of your gateway and/or sensor.

9. Press "Submit."

When you are finished adding the sensor to your account, insert the battery.  The sensor will power within 10-20 seconds. Once online, your sensor is ready to be deployed.

Placing and Mounting the Sensor

MSG's wireless open/closed sensors detect when a door or window is open or closed. For the sensor to work properly, the magnet will need to be within 1 inch of the magnet sensor. The magnet and sensor have a double-sided sticky tape which allows them to be affixed to the door and the door frame. The magnet should be attached to the door, and the sensor should be attached to the door frame. Ensure that the magnet and sensor are mounted where they will not interfere with the door motion when opening and closing.

Proper Antenna Orientation for Optimal Operation

To get the best performance out of your Wireless Sensors, it is important to note proper antenna orientation and sensor positioning. Antennas should all be oriented in the same direction, pointing vertically from the sensor. If the sensor is mounted flat on its back on a horizontal surface, you should bend the antenna as close to the sensor housing as possible giving you the most amount of antenna pointing vertically. You should make the antenna wire as straight as possible, avoiding any kinks and curving of the wire. Sensors must be at least 3 ft. away from other sensors and the wireless gateway to function properly.

Configure the Sensor Settings in Software

To edit a sensor’s operation settings, click on the sensor tab, click on the Kebab icon and select Settings.

The sensor edit screen allows you to set the primary configurations for the sensor.  When you have finished making changes, press the “Save” button at the bottom of this section.

Note: Be sure to click the “Save” button anytime you make a change to any of the sensor parameters. All changes made to the sensor settings will be downloaded to the sensor on the next sensor heartbeat (check-in). Once a change has been made and “Saved,” you will not be able to edit that sensor’s configurations again until the sensor has downloaded the new setting.
